Neuromuscular Injectables:     Botox

Currently, Botulinum toxin is most commonly used medication for the management of hyperfunctional lines or wrinkles. Wrinkles often caused patients to be misinterpreted as angry, anxious, fearful, or fatigued.  Injections of Botulinum toxin A are an important anti aging therapy that provides the opportunity to rejuvenate the facial expressions with minimal morbidity.

Pharmacology

The Clostridium Botulinum bacterium produces 7 distinct toxins lettered A through G. All 7 toxins are antigenically distinct; however, toxin A is most familiar to clinicians. The toxin requires 24-72 hours to take effect. The paralysis of the involved muscle requires the toxin bind to the nerve and stops it from functioning.     Some individuals may require as many as 5 days for the full effect to be observed.

Contraindications to BOTOX® injections include the following:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breast feeding
  • History of reaction to toxin or albumin
  • Some muscle diseases
  • Age younger than 12 years
  • Any Infection at the required injection site
