Microdermabrasion, also known as microderm, is one of the easiest and most effective anti-aging treatments you can get.

Its benefits are many:

  • Softens fine lines and wrinkles
  • Helps to smooth coarsely textured skin
  • Decreases the appearance of scarring
  • Decreases pore size
  • Reduces superficial hyper-pigmentation, also known as "age spots"

Microdermabrasion also makes it easier for high-tech skin care products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen, which gives skin its youthful appearance.

Sanctuary has brought the Diamond Peel process combining microdermabrasion and specially selected chemical peels for improved collagen production, reduction of hyperpigmentation, and acne scarring reversal.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a quick, no downtime procedures that renews the skin by lifting dead cells off the surface of your skin with a gentle polishing with crystals. With a series of microdermabrasion procedures you can quickly achieve substantial improvement in the appearance of superficial lines and uneven pigmentation, while making your skin look and feel softer, smoother, and more radiant.

Microdermabrasion is essentially powerful mechanical exfoliation with a specialized professional machine.  It works by removing the uppermost layer of dead skin cells from the face, chest and hands, giving results you can't achieve with a home microdermabrasion kit, which is basically a scrub for the face that is often too abrasive and can even irritate skin.

The Benefits of Microdermabrasion

  • Fine lines and wrinkles become less apparent
  • Skin tone evens out
  • Texture becomes more refined
  • Oily or acne prone skin is improved
  • Enlarged pores appear smaller
  • Superficial scars appear reduced
  • Skin appears healthier and more youthful
  • Pigmentation is reduced in all skin types

A typical protocol is six treatments about 10 to 14 days apart.  Because the machine can be adjusted depending on skin type and condition, even people with sensitive skin can get a treatment from a skilled esthetician.

The Changing Technology of Microdermabrasion

The original microdermabrasion technology, which has been around since the '80s, is called crystal microdermabrasion. It uses a wand to both spray and vacuum up aluminum oxide crystals, also known as corundum onto the skin.  Corundum is the second hardest mineral after diamonds.

The effect was an aggressive removal of dead skin cells by literally "sand blasting" them off.  One side effect was the tiny corundum particles, or grit, would be left on the skin.

Growing in popularity is the newer diamond-tip microdermabrasion. It achieves the same results but with less discomfort and without the crystal residue at the end of the treatment.  Sanctuary uses diamond-tip microdermabrasion exclusively.

Diamond tip microdermabrasion can be used for acne improvement and on sensitive rosacea prone skin, unlike traditional crystal microdermabrasion.

Don't expect to get the same results with a home microdermabrasion kit, which works more like a scrub. In fact, you can easily overdo it and irritate your skin.

How Microdermabrasion Works

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion uses vacuum technology and a hand-held wand, but there aren't any crystals moving through the tip. The diamond tip itself exfoliates the skin and the vacuum whisks the dead skin away. There are many different tips with various grades of roughness, and the esthetician chooses the correct one for your skin type and condition.

Acne scars and enlarged pores may become less noticeable, and acne breakouts may be reduced.

For the best results, it is generally recommended get a series of treatments. Your esthetician should be able to recommend the number that is appropriate for your skin type and condition.

Sanctuary has trained estheticians and physician administered treatment protocols that are customized to your skin. It is important to realize that you have taken off the outermost layer of the skin, which is also its protection, so this is not the time to go to the beach. Be careful with your skin a few days after the microdermabrasion treatment: don't do vigorous exercise and don't expose your skin to the sun. Wear a gentle physical sunscreen, even if its a cloudy day.

Post microderm instructions and home care products are selected as part of your complete program at Sanctuary.

When should one start Microdermabrasion?

After your initial consultation, you will be given a pigment lightening gel which must be applied daily for ten days before the exfoliation process can begin. This down regulates the enzyme that produces melanin and will prevent the possibility of post inflammatory pigmentation (PIH) that can occur after any exfoliation procedure.

The skin is continually undergoing natural exfoliation. As one ages, the epidermal cell turnover slows down and one’s skin becomes dull because the topmost layer consisting of dead cells becomes too thick. This dead layer can challenge the skin causing whiteheads, blackheads, rough texture and uneven appearance of the skin tone.

If one exfoliates with microdermabrasion regularly, new healthy skin cell are exposed to nutrients from the air, water and daily skin products. These nutrients are then transported to the deeper skin cells where they are needed, improving circulation. Potential benefits of exfoliation include fresher, brighter looking skin and better penetration of active ingredients of skin care products.

The need for invasive major facelifts will be much less because the current generation of savvy 20- , 30- and 40 - year-olds have all the preventative tools available to them such as microdermabrasion and will not allow their faces to get to the stage that today's 50- and 60-year-olds have.

What results can be expected after Microdermabrasion?

  • Fine lines and wrinkles become less apparent
  • Skin tone evens out
  • Texture becomes more refined
  • Oily or acne prone skin is improved
  • Enlarged pores appear smaller
  • Superficial scars appear reduced
  • Skin appears healthier and more youthful
  • Pigmentation is reduced in all skin types

What to Expect after a microdermabrasion procedure.

Usually the skin is normal immediately after a mild microdermabrasion procedure and makeup may be applied after your session.

Microdermabrasion may be repeated at one to two week intervals for a series of 6 treatments until the desired clinical effect is achieved. With each additional treatment, you should see incremental gains in the overall appearance of the skin.

Your skin usually feels tighter and smoother.

You will care for your skin by using a mild non-abrasive cleanser or other mild products for five days as well as protecting your new skin with adequate sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as an active ingredient. In addition, it is best to avoid prolonged sun exposure.

Can microdermabrasion be combined with other treatments?

Microdermabrasion can be performed alone or in combination with the numerous other treatments we offer at Sanctuary.

Microdermabrasion is part of our signature treatment Microdermabrasion / IPL 4/4 treatment. For maximal benefit, 4 to 6 in-office professional microdermabrasion procedures every 2 – 4 weeks should be teamed with an anti ageing optional extra or laser treatments to create an environment in which the skin is continuously rejuvenated.

At Sanctuary we pride ourselves on visible results. As an aesthetic clinic we offer anti ageing treatments and problem specific additives as an addition to our microdermabrasion to ensure amazing results.

If you feel that your skin requires more intensive treatments please schedule an appointment with the aesthetic doctor to determine which medical aesthetic treatment should be prescribed.
